  • Continuing on our Dementia Adventure

Dementia Adventure visited our head office in mid July to run a workshop to enable our staff to build on the knowledge they have gained by becoming Dementia Friends.

The workshop also gave our colleagues further insight into the different types of dementia, what it's like to live with the condition and what we can do to improve the experience our customers have with us.

Dementia Adventure is a registered charity dedicated to supporting people with dementia to get outdoors, connect with nature, themselves and their community, and retain a sense of adventure in their lives.

The charity is also working with us to help ensure that all of our visitor sites are dementia friendly and a full review of the sites will take place later this year.

During the workshop many topics were covered and those taking part were given advice and guidance on:

    • how to ask customers about their condition
    • what it is we can do to help them
    • how to prepare for home visits to customers living with dementia, particularly those who aren't expecting us
    • how we might manage situations involving power of attorney
    • what other training might be beneficial for our employees.

Staff who took part gave positive feedback including these comments: "… it was a safe and honest room with great examples" and "… really helpful having a good cross section of the business here" and "… very useful in discovering new ways to communicate with people with dementia".

A guest from the 3 Nations Dementia Working Group also joined the session to share his own experience of living with dementia which was a fantastic opportunity for our teams to learn much more about how we can improve through lived experience.

Another employee said: "Very enlightening - there is so much we, as a business and society do not know about the challenges surrounding dementia, so having the opportunity to talk openly about them was fantastic. Thank you".
